Security in Schools

INTRODUCTION

Schools by their very nature, pose a special and very sensitive security problem. We are all very protective of our children and expect them to be cared for in a safe environment, something which perhaps in the past, we took for granted. The security and behavioural problems of the minority within schools today, are an unfortunate reflection on attitudes within society in general and however we may view these problems or debate their causes, we cannot escape the fact that they exist. Solutions must be found that will protect our children and the public investment in school buildings and school property in general without detracting from the happy and friendly environment that a school should provide for the most valuable asset we have, our children. As a security company, we have been actively involved in assisting schools in many ways. Having organised several successful seminars on the practical application of C.C.T.V. in schools and providing information on the 'Closed Circuit Television Challenge Competition 1996/7', we were asked by the Home Office to distribute their literature and application forms to those schools interested in that possible avenue of funding. Subsequently, we were invited to carry out security surveys for nearly forty schools. Apart from just considering the likes of perimeter security and surveillance or control of entrances etc. we have taken the opportunity to question those involved in the running of the schools, from head teachers to caretakers in order to establish exactly what sort of problems they have encountered and the areas of their greatest concern for the future. We were also able to establish some of the negative side encountered with security measures taken to date. In order to provide useful information for those who are involved with or responsible for school security, we have published the results of our research and our subsequent experience gained from our installations in schools exploring effective applications of security solutions showing both the advantages and the disadvantages of many of the measures that might be under consideration.
