    Access Control Systems

Access Control Systems can provide a convenient and cost effective means of restricting access to callers who have been identified and/or to authorised users. The design of the system must take into account the type of use which can be expected and the level of security required. The system must be practical and easy to use and care must be taken to ensure that accidental lock-outs cannot occur and that the system does not impede exit from the premises in the event of a fire or emergency evacuation.

Types of Access Control Systems

Door Entry / Intercom System

All callers press the external button and can then hold a two way conversation with the person who answers via the telephone handset. If required, the door can then be released using the button on the handset.

A C.C.T.V. camera and monitor can also be incorporated to aid identification, either as an integral part of the intrcom system or as a part of a C.C.T.V. system at the premises.

Digital Code System

Authorised users can gain access using the correct code. An intercom system can also be included for visitors with or without C.C.T.V. as above.

Magnetic Card & Proximity Systems

Authorised users can gain access using a card or a fob which can be 'voided' in order to bar access to a specific user. Again, an intercom system with or without C.C.T.V. can be incorpoated for visitors if appropriate. Magnetic cards are like credit cards and have to be passed through a slot in the reader. Proximity cards or fobs are passed close to the reader and with the fobs being extremeley durable and passive (no batteries) the additional outlay can prove worthwile in the long run.

Card and proximity systems can be enhanced with the introduction of a P.C. which can be used for programming, validating, voiding and recording use of cards or fobs to gain access through specific doors logging date and time etc. A system incorporating a P.C. can provide an easy solutions where a large number of doors or users is specified.

Electric Locking Devices

Locking devices range from the simple release used in conjunction with a rim lock to magnetic locks, solenoid bolts and motorised locks. The type of locking device used should reflelect the volume of use and the level of security required together with the construction of the door itself.
